FEDERATION FOR INTERNET ALERTS

FIA leverages the Internet to maximize the effectiveness of emergency alerts.

FIA ALERT HUB

FIA has a working "Alert Hub" on the Amazon Cloud. The short video explains how this free public service is always on, taking in and distributing Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) alerts issued by alerting authorities anywhere in the world. We have developed some filters that can make the Alert Hub easier to use, such as providing a specific feed for "high priority" alerts, and are working to develop additional filters in the near future.

WHAT WE DO & WHERE WE CAME FROM

FIA began as a partnership between Conversant and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in January 2011, adding GroupM in 2012.

FIA leverages the Internet to maximize the effectiveness of emergency alerts. Using the latest information from official authorities we create alerts for serious events such as child abductions, tornado warnings and other hazards. Alerts are immediately displayed to users in the impacted areas, on whatever device they’re using.

FIA started as and continues to be a communal effort.

TOGETHER WE CAN SAVE LIVES

Callahan Walsh is a child advocate for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). Mr. Walsh and his organization have achieved significant success in helping save children's lives, also serving as a Supporting Authority for FIA. For the second year in a row, FIA won the 2016 People's Voice Webby for Public Service and Activism in the Interactive Advertising category. He attended the 2016 Webby Awards in New York City to deliver FIA's 5 Word acceptance speech, "Together We Can Save Lives."

AMBER COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED

Sheriff Dee Anderson co-founded the AMBER Plan, a cooperative effort between law enforcement and the media to instantly alert the public of suspected child abductions. The AMBER Plan has received global acclaim. Sheriff Anderson is an active supporter of FIA's mission. FIA won the 2015 People's Voice Webby for Public Service and Activism in the Interactive Advertising category. He attended the 2015 Webby Awards in New York City to deliver FIA's 5 Word acceptance speech, "Amber Could Have Been Saved."

OUR MISSION

FIA’s mission is to help its Partners in striving to get crucial alerts in front of the right people at the right time and in the right location.

Our goals are to:

  • Facilitate collaboration between Internet technology and services companies, non-governmental organizations, and alerting authorities to promote standards-based, all-hazards, all-media, authoritative alerting to people all over the world.
  • Establish a precise notification system that dynamically renders emergency alerts and automatically disseminates them, via the Internet, to the right people at the right time.
  • Drive new technological integrations within the US and abroad to develop comprehensive strategies for the rapid distribution of life-saving alerts (e.g., AMBER Alerts, National Weather Service advisories and warnings).

HOW WE ARE HELPING

FIA's Impact on Tornado Warnings

Since 2012, for each of the last 10,000 tornado warnings issued by the National Weather Service, FIA Partners have sent an average of three tornado warnings per user device in the alerting areas. That is a total of more than 10 million tornado warning "impressions" (e.g., a single overlay of an ad on a device screen).

FIA’s Impact on AMBER ALERT

FIA sends AMBER Alerts to almost 15 million unique devices per month and has reached many millions of people in the designated areas. An average person receives four messages for each AMBER Alert and that is a total of more than 750 million AMBER Alert "impressions" (e.g., a single overlay of an ad on a device screen).
